And its perfume? 16A Orchard Eau de Parfum marks a moment of rebirth, a skin scent that suits the wearer with revered, natural roots. It was commissioned to celebrate the reinvention of Aedes Parfumery and its move to 16A Orchard Street on New York's Lower East Side, a vibrant area that attracts a hip and diverse crowd, where galleries, skaters, cafes and small upscale shops they create energy and excitement. In 2021, it has taken on a deeper meaning for Aedes de Venustas founders Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl. “Every single soul has gone through a big change in their life,” Gerstner says. "During this time, we have rooted ourselves here, in this neighborhood that represents the renewal of New York. Without knowing it, we have created something much more important." Not just a smell, but a sensation. Something that is nourished and then grows. “Using ingredients extracted from natural roots such as ginger and iris reconnects us to our land, making us feel rooted and centered,” says perfumer Frank Voelkl. But rather than recognizing a single note or fragrance category, 16A Orchard presents itself as a bit of a mystery. “You don't immediately know what to do, and that's what makes it interesting,” Gerstner says. "You can't put your finger on it. That's also the essence of the Lower East Side. It teaches you to think - and live - outside the box." Earthly materials become airy in Voelkl's hands. Ginger raises questions, leads you astray. The iris brings us back to the center of attention, revealing cold but delicate qualities. Quince and muguet amplify the roots. Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka create a spicy, dry roundness for the more ephemeral notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom and jasmine.
