According to legend, Adonis, the Greek god of beauty, desire and rebirth, tragically died while hunting. Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) rushed to his side, cutting herself on a thorn of a rose bush. The rose, a symbol of Aphrodite, was created pure, and the white was now a brilliant shade of crimson, stained with her blood. A kiss from the goddess Aphrodite would awaken Adonis; thus, the circle of life would continue.
