This problem is caused not only by the aging process, excessive exposure to UV radiation also plays a role. The tender skin on the hands is often the first to show signs of aging, becoming flecked and wrinkled. With frequent exposure to ultraviolet radiation, the melanocytes (pigment cells) produce excessive amounts of melanin (pigment) in order to protect the skin.
The pigment produced is then transferred to the keratinocytes, which in turn take the pigment to the upper surface of the skin. In young skin, the cells are renewed constantly, and the pigment spreads through the skin quickly and rapidly. However, in older skin, the division of cells slows down, with the result that the pigment is no longer evenly spread and concentrations of pigment can become too large in places, which causes unsightly spots.
